Matt's Safe School Law

A new anti-bullying law passed this week by the Michigan Senate makes an exception for religious and moral beliefs.

"Matt's Safe School Law", named for 14-year-old Matt Epling, includes a provision specifically noting that the law doesn't prohibit expression of religious or moral viewpoints.

"This section does not prohibit a statement of a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction of a school employee, school volunteer, pupil, or a pupil's parent or guardian"

Senator Gretchen Whitmer spoke out against the bill.

  1. Hi! I am a school counselor and prevent bullying daily. I hope you don't mind me commenting but you are reading the law incorrectly. The words "you can only bully if.." are not part of the bill. ALL bullying is prohibited regardless of "motivating animus" (meaning NO motive for bullying will be acceptable). And at the same time, good-faith discussions of a religious nature are still protected. Disagreeing with homosexuality for religious reasons is not bullying. Bullying for religious reasons is still bullying.

    Senator Whitmer is mistaken..
