Churches: Tax-Exempt, Non-Profit, Charity Organizations

The popular image of a church is that of a selfless organization unconcerned with financial gain. It is reflected in the fact that churches receive tax-exempt status from federal and state governments.

But that doesn’t mean that churches are not, at least partially, money-making enterprises. Though official records are scarce, the world’s major churches are all believed to collect annual revenues in excess of several billion dollars.

Read More: Not for Profit

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has long been one of the world’s wealthiest religious groups. In 1997, Time Magazine found that current LDS assets totaled $30 billion. If LDS were a corporation, Time continued, its estimated $5.9 billion in annual revenues would have placed it midway through the Fortune 500.

In 2005, MSNBC reported that the Roman Catholic Church owned more real estate globally than any other organization or individual on earth. In 2001, an official report stated that the church’s real estate activities in fiscal year 2000 produced a $30 billion profit. The Boston Globe found that “contributions from worldwide dioceses” totaled $92.9 million in 2005, while individual donations made directly to the Pope neared $60 million.

Jehovah's Witness Dies After Refusing Blood

England: A schoolboy died after refusing a blood transfusion following a car crash because he was a Jehovah’s Witness.

Joshua McAuley, 15, suffered life-threatening injuries to his legs and abdomen after being pinned against a shop front by an out-of-control car. He survived the crash in Smethwick, West Midlands, and remained conscious, but lost a massive amount of blood and was airlifted to hospital for a transfusion. But Joshua died six hours later, after he refused to consent to the operation because of his faith, church representatives said.

As a Jehovah’s Witness from a devout family, Joshua followed the belief that blood is sacred and transfusions are prohibited by the Bible. Hospital staff are thought to have begged the teenager to change his mind, but he refused.

Putting A Christian Stamp On History

Texas: After three days of turbulent meetings, the Texas Board of Education approved a social studies curriculum that will put a conservative stamp on history and economics textbooks, stressing the superiority of American capitalism, questioning the Founding Fathers’ commitment to a purely secular government and presenting Republican political philosophies in a more positive light.

Read More: Rewriting History

California may soon take a stand against proposed changes to social studies textbooks ordered by the Texas school board, as a way to prevent them from being incorporated in California texts.

The Texas recommendations, which face a final vote by the Republican-dominated board on May 21, include adding language saying the country's Founding Fathers were guided by Christian principles and a new section on "the conservative resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s." That would include positive references to the Moral Majority, the National Rifle Association and the Contract with America, the congressional GOP manifesto from the 1990s. The new textbooks would also minimize Thomas Jefferson's role in world and U.S. history because he advocated the separation of church and state.

Nun Demoted After Making Life Saving Decision

Arizona: A Catholic nun and long-time administrator at St Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix has been demoted because she had been part of a team that decided to end the pregnancy of a critically ill patient.

Sister Margaret McBride, the highest-ranking member of the Sisters of Mercy at the hospital – was “automatically excommunicated”. The actions followed a last-minute, life-or-death drama in late 2009. The patient had a rare and often fatal condition in which a pregnancy can cause the death of the mother. McBride was part of a group of people, including the patient and doctors, who decided upon the course of action.

Cartoonist Lars Vilks Attacked During Lecture On Free Speech

Sweden: A Swedish artist whose drawing of the Prophet Muhammad offended Muslims said Wednesday he hopes to get another chance to deliver a lecture on free-speech that was interrupted by violent protests.

While Vilks escaped the incident with broken glasses and a degree of shock, he said it raised concerns about the freedom of expression at Sweden's oldest and most prestigious institute of higher learning.

"What you get is a mob deciding what can be discussed at the university," Vilks told The Associated Press, adding he was ready to repeat the lecture if re-invited.

The 53-year-old artist has faced numerous threats over his 2007 sketch of Muhammad with a dog's body. Earlier this year U.S. investigators said he was the target of an alleged murder plot involving Colleen LaRose, an American woman who dubbed herself "Jihad Jane," and who now faces life in prison.

Rush Limbaugh On Gulf Of Mexico Disaster

The latest outrageous claim by Rush Limbaugh is about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
On top of claiming that the explosion could be eco-terrorism (without any kind of evidence), Rush Limbaugh said that the cleanup was unnecessary.

"The ocean will take care of this on its own if it was left alone and left out there," Limbaugh said. "It's natural. It's as natural as the ocean water is."

Joseph Smith, Jr.

Joseph Smith, Jr (December 23, 1805 – June 27, 1844) was the founder and prophet of the Latter Day Saint movement. In the late 1820s, Smith announced that an angel had given him a set of golden plates engraved with a chronicle of ancient American peoples, which he had a unique gift to translate. In 1830, he published the resulting narratives as the Book of Mormon and founded the Church of Christ in western New York.

Moving the church to Kirtland, Ohio, in 1831. He sent some to Jackson County, Missouri, to establish a city of Zion. In 1833, Missouri settlers expelled the Saints from Zion. Fleeing an arrest warrant in Kirtland, Smith joined his remaining followers in Far West, Missouri. Believing the Saints to be in insurrection, the Missouri governor ordered their expulsion from Missouri, and Smith was imprisoned on capital charges.

After escaping state custody in 1839, Smith directed the conversion of a swampland into Nauvoo, Illinois, where he became both mayor and commander of a militia. In 1843, he announced his candidacy for President of the United States. Smith first declared martial law, then surrendered to the governor of Illinois. He was killed by a mob while awaiting trial in Carthage, Illinois.

Joseph claimed an ability to use seer stones for locating lost items and buried treasure. To do so, Smith would put a stone in a white stovepipe hat and would then see the required information in reflections given off by the stone. In 1823, while praying, Smith said he was visited at night by an angel named Moroni, who revealed the location of a buried book of golden plates as well as other artifacts, including a breastplate and a set of silver spectacles with lenses composed of seer stones.

Helping Teenagers See The Dangers Of Evolution

The teaching of evolution is robbing America’s teenagers of their intellectual potentials. By allowing the atheists to teach our young people the imaginary "science" of evolution, we are crippling the ability of America's youth to survive and thrive in life's real world.

I blame evolution as a major cause of teenage suicides. Evolution teaches superstition, impairs critical thinking and encourages homosexuality.
