Pastor Charged With Conspiracy To Sell Heroin

Wisconsin: A Milwaukee man who worked as a pastor and a youth counselor until last summer has been charged in federal court with dealing heroin, according to court documents.

John West, 59, and nine others, including his son, were indicted on charges of conspiracy to sell heroin from the summer of 2009 until March. A mother and her adult son are among those charged.

Court documents describe West as the leader of the group. He often went to Chicago to buy heroin, developed an "innovative way of cutting" the drug to maximize profits, hired armed enforcers to protect the operation and personally carried a gun.

West was ordained in 1969 and most recently was a pastor with his wife, Linda Hughes, at the Prayer House of Deliverance, according to his attorney and court documents

Pastor Charged With 12 Counts Of Sexual Abuse Of A Minor

Alaska: The former pastor of a Fairbanks church was back in the state Tuesday to answer charges that he engaged in a months-long sexual relationship with a teenage girl.

Shawn Anthony Justice, 32, was arraigned before Superior Court Judge Douglas Blankenship. Justice pleaded not guilty to all 12 counts of sexual abuse of a minor, a class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

 Fairbanks police believe Justice met the 15-year-old victim while he was pastor. Justice initially engaged in suspicious activity with the girl, such as sending her inappropriate text messages at church functions, according to police. However, the relationship between Justice and the teen allegedly became sexual last summer, months after he was dismissed as pastor of the church.

Father Bill Casey Arrested For Molestation

Tennessee: The former pastor of St. John Neumann Catholic Church was arrested by Greene County officials early Monday, April 19.

William “Bill” Casey, former pastor of the Farragut church, admitted accusations of sexual abuse with a 10-year-old boy in the 1970s aimed at him are credible. The admission led to his subsequent arrest.

Richard F. Stika, bishop of the Diocese of Knoxville, conveyed Casey’s acknowledgment of an accusation presented by Warren Tucker during a press conference Thursday, April 15. Tucker, 44, said Casey abused him from about 1975-1980, starting when he was 10 years old.

Pastor Charged With Molesting A 13 Year Old

Maryland: A Chestertown pastor has been charged with sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy.

Jerry Darnell Bartley, 39, was arrested Wednesday and charged with six counts of sodomy and one count each of second-degree child abuse, sex abuse of a minor, sex abuse of a minor continuing course of conduct and second-degree assault. His bail was set Thursday at $500,000.

Bartley is a pastor of the Faith and Deliverance Church in Chestertown and a licensed foster parent. He is charged with the continued sexual assault and sodomy against a early teen boy originally put in his foster care, a boy police say he eventually adopted in 2008.

LDS Youth Leader Faces Sex Abuse Charges

Utah: A former Farr West church youth leader was ordered to stand trial Tuesday on charges he groped and fondled four teenage girls at his home in 2007 and 2009.

Cory C. Campbell, 37, faces one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony. He also faces two second-degree felony counts of forcible sexual abuse and two counts of sexual battery, both are class A misdemeanors.

Campbell waived his right to a preliminary hearing on four of the charges. But Judge Michael Lyon heard testimony concerning the aggravated sexual abuse charge, which involved a girl who was 11 or 12 when the alleged abuse occurred. At the time, the girl was a friend of Campbell's daughter.

Pastor Charged With Rape And Aggravated Sexual Abuse

Utah: Additional child sex abuse charges were filed against a lay pastor at Living Word Christian Fellowship who also ran an unsuccessful bid to unseat Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, four years ago in the race for U.S. House of Representatives.

St. George Police said Kris Lounsbury, 62, was arrested Thursday on the new charges. A 10-year-old girl confided in her father that Lounsbury, 62, allegedly had touched and fondled her over an extended period of time.

Lounsbary was already charged with two counts of rape, two counts of aggravated sex abuse of a child and two counts of forcible sexual abuse.

Lounsbury was a GOP candidate for Congress in 2006, running on a platform of abolishing the income tax, deporting illegal immigrants, abolishing the United Nations, and fighting gay rights laws. In January 2009 he posted a recording of a sermon calling for imprecatory prayer curses against President Obama.

Pastor Exposes Himself On Webcam

Utah: A former pastor for the Church of God of Prophecy was sentenced on Monday to serve 90 days in jail for exposing himself on a Web camera to an undercover police officer who was posing as a minor last year.

William J. Blanscet, 68, was charged in May with four counts of third-degree felony dealing in material harmful to a minor, each punishable by up to five years in prison.

Blanscet showed his genitals and would masturbate in front of a Web camera, according to charges. One incident where Blanscet exposed himself occurred while he used the Internet while visiting his wife in the hospital, charges state.

Father William Ventura Busted In Prostitution Sting

Massachusetts: A popular and seemingly devout young Chelmsford priest’s arrest in a prostitution sting has stunned his parishioners.

The Rev. William Ventura of St. John the Evangelist Parish was placed on a voluntary leave by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston after he was arrested Friday night in Nashua, N.H., church officials and police said.

Ventura, 31, was charged with a misdemeanor for attempting to solicit an adult, said Nashua police Capt. Scott R. Howe. Ventura was one of eight people nabbed in a hotel sting. He was released pending his arraignment on April 21.

Priest Pleads Guilty to Assault On Teen Boy

Arizona: He was once the second-highest ranking Catholic priest within the Phoenix Diocese. Thursday, former Monsignor Dale Fushek pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor assault.

The 57-year-old admitted to inappropriately touching a boy while running a youth program during the mid 1980's. Fushek admitted to touching the genitals of his victim through the victim's clothing.

Fushek was accused of molesting seven boys, but in return for one guilty plea, the other charges were dropped.

Pastor Melvin Lynn Silas Charged With Felony Bigamy

California: A pastor at a Bellflower church has been charged with bigamy for allegedly marrying a woman in Las Vegas while still married to his estranged wife. Melvin Lynn Silas, 55, is the pastor of "Church of the Great I Am" in Bellflower.

Silas' estranged wife contacted authorities in December after she found records on the Internet of her husband's new marriage.

Silas' eight-page rap sheet includes convictions for pimping, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and other crimes. He's been arrested more than 25 times, and convicted of more than five felonies and more than five misdemeanors, according to records attached to his court file.

Pastor Carlton Hammonds On Trial For Sexual Assault

California: The Willows pastor charged with sexually assaulting two teenage girls from is congregation is set to appear Thursday in Glenn County Superior Court. A jury trial for the Rev. Carlton F. Hammonds of the Willows Baptist Church on Tehama Street is scheduled for April 26.

Hammonds, 56, has pleaded not guilty to four felony charges, including lewd acts on a child and sexual battery.

Glenn County prosecutors have said they believe Hammonds may have victimized many children from his church, but only plan to pursue charges on behalf of two reported victims. Hammonds' prior criminal record from the 1970s, includes a bank robbery conviction and multiple drug-related arrests. Hammonds was arrested Nov. 20 outside his Tehama Street church by Glenn County sheriff's deputies after nearly a three-year investigation.

After an Icelandic volcano continued to spew ash into the sky Saturday, halting President Obama's planned flight to Poland, conservative icon Rush Limbaugh said the surprising strength and timing of the eruption suggests a God displeased with the passage of health care reform.

"You know, a couple of days after the health care bill had been signed into law Obama ran around all over the country saying, 'Hey, you know, I’m looking around. The earth hadn’t opened up. Inappropriately Dressed Woman Cause Earthquakes

Iran: A senior Iranian cleric has given a new reason for women to cover up. If they don't dress modestly, Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi claims, this leads to adulterous affairs. These, in turn, lead to earthquakes.

"Many women who dress inappropriately ... cause youths to go astray, taint their chastity and incite extramarital sex in society, which increases earthquakes," the Ayatollah told worshippers at Friday prayers in Tehran.

A radical Islamic group has targeted "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone for violent retaliation because they depicted the prophet Mohammed in a bear suit on the show's 200th episode that aired on Comedy Central last week.

Boy Scouts Guilty In Sex Abuse Case

Oregon: A jury awarded $1.4 million to a former Portland man and decided that the Boy Scouts organization was liable for up to $25 million in punitive damages.

Lawyers for Kerry Lewis, 38, the victim who filed the lawsuit, argued the Boy Scouts organization was reckless for allowing former assistant Scoutmaster Timur Dykes to continue to associate with the victim's Scout troop after Dykes acknowledged to a bishop for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints early in 1983 that he had molested 17 Boy Scouts.

Dykes was later convicted three times of various abuse charges involving boys and served time in prison. Shortly before trial, he acknowledged in a deposition to abusing Lewis.


The church was the charter organization for an estimated third to one half of the Boy Scout troops in the nation in the 1980s.

Preacher Guilty Of Murder/Abuse

Alabama: After deliberating for 1-1/2 hours, the six-man, six-woman panel convicted Anthony Hopkins of murder, second-degree rape, second-degree sex abuse, second-degree sodomy and incest.

Prosecutors argued that Hopkins, a preacher and self-proclaimed prophet, murdered 36-year-old Arletha Hopkins in the midst of a fight in December 2004 after she learned he was sexually abusing his stepdaughter. During the trial, that stepdaughter, now 21, said she helped Hopkins bury her mother's body before transferring it to a freezer.

Pastor Arrested For Prescription Fraud

Alabama: An assistant pastor at a Mount Vernon church faces a series of drug charges after authorities said she tried to forge drug prescriptions and was found with hundreds of pills that did not belong to her.

43-year-old Bertha Wright, who lives in Pensacola, was arrested March 5 after trying to fill a fraudulent prescription at a Florida pharmacy.

Wright was charged with 11 counts of possessing a controlled substance without a prescription, three counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, one count of trafficking in hydrocodone and one count of possession of a blank prescription.

Florida authorities said Bertha Wright had a variety of drugs -- such as Lorcet, codeine and methadone -- when she was arrested.

Pastor Gets 10 Years Probation For Sexual Assault

Texas: A pastor was sentenced to 10 years' probation Friday after pleading "no contest" to a charge of sexually assaulting a child.

Dallas County prosecutors say Lester Cody III assaulted the girl when she was 15 and 16. Cody was given deferred adjudication probation, which means he will not have a criminal record if he follows the terms of his probation. He must also pay a $10,000 fine.

Cody was a minister at Faith Crossing Church in Forney when he was arrested, but prosecutors say the abuse occurred when the church was in Mesquite. Cody was the girl's minister and a family friend.

Priest Pleads Guilty To Child Porn Charges

Missouri: The former pastor of St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, in south St. Louis, pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal charge of possessing child pornography, and admitted that he tried to pay for sex with a 16-year-old girl.

The Rev. James Patrick Grady, 58, was nabbed in an FBI pedophile sting last summer, in which he had agreed to pay $80 for oral sex. Investigators later discovered child porn on his laptop computer, which had been purchased by his parish.

Under a plea agreement, Grady will be sentenced to six years and eight months in prison, and must register as a sex offender upon his release.

Priest Gets 18 Months For Preying On Haitian Boys

Ontario: Former priest John Duarte begged for forgiveness Thursday as he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for sexually abusing adolescent boys at the mission he founded in Haiti.

Duarte was arrested in the Dominican Republic and originally charged with nine counts of sexual exploitation in October for sex crimes committed in the impoverished fishing village of Labadie on Haiti’s north coast and the country’s capital of Port-au-Prince, pleaded guilty to three counts in Superior Court.

April Fools!

Utah: A Brigham Young University student has been arrested on suspicion of using a stun gun on a woman and trying to handcuff her. Stetson Hallam was booked Thursday night into the Utah County jail on third-degree felony charges of aggravated assault and attempted kidnapping.

Police say he had pursued the woman romantically, but she had no interest in him. They also say he was the woman's home teacher in their Mormon church ward. Hallam claimed it was all an April Fool's joke.

Pastor Found Guilty Of Possessing Child Porn

Texas: A former Lubbock pastor faces up to 10 years in prison, a lifetime of supervised release and a hefty fine after pleading guilty Thursday to attempted possession of child pornography.

Dean Richard Tarkington admitted to engaging in online sexual activity both at his home and at his office at the Word of Faith Christian Center, according to court documents.

Tarkington was arrested in January after soliciting sexual material from an undercover Louisiana State Police officer posing as a 15-year-old girl from Mississippi and as a 16-year-old girl from Louisiana. Tarkington made contact with the officer and told the "girl" he would like to have sex with her after viewing pictures purported to be of her.

Pastor Arrested For Torturing His Wife

Kentucky: 37-year-old Alonzo Bradley was arrested and charged with assault in what detectives call one of the worst cases of domestic violence they have seen. Bradley is accused of torturing his wife for years.

Police say he used to be the pastor at the Freedom Pentecostal Church on Conley Fork in Floyd County; but detectives say behind closed doors he tortured his wife for a decade.


“It's just a horrendous case. It's one of the worst assaults we've seen on a woman in a long time. Sadistic type injuries to this woman of beating with implements and using instruments to actually burn her with and so forth, so it's just a terrible situation,” said KSP trooper Mike Goble.

Bradley was arrested wearing a "Be Like Jesus" t-shirt.

Pastor Pleads Guilty To Incest

West Virginia: A former teacher and pastor has pleaded guilty to a charge of incest in Mingo County Circuit Court.

Johnny Ray Dempsey, 36, of Delbarton,was arrested in January by Sgt. Joe Smith with the Mingo County Sheriffs Department. He was charged with sexual abuse by a parent and incest.

At the time of the crime, Dempsey was a teacher at Tug Valley High School and a the pastor of a local church.

Rev. Faces Child Porn Charges

Florida: A Hall County school bus driver and self-described “Patriot Preacher” was arrested Thursday on child pornography charges, authorities said.
John Cooper Spinks, 41, was arrested at his Oakwood home after FBI agents carried out a search warrant there early Thursday morning.

Spinks tried to trade child pornography during online chats with undercover officers. He was arrested on federal charges related to the receipt, possession and distribution of child pornography.

Spinks was formerly a senior pastor with Center Grove Baptist Church in Pendergrass, where he preached from February 2008 until June 2009. Spinks also was vice president and chaplain of Christian Men for America, which organized three “God and Country” rallies last year at Hall County churches.

Priest Accused Of Child Sex Abuse

Maryland: A Sept. 28 trial date has been set for a retired priest removed from his position in the Catholic Church after allegations of child sexual abuse in the mid-1970s surfaced.

On Jan. 22, a Frederick County grand jury indicted Thomas Roy Bevan on two counts of child abuse by a custodian.

If convicted, Bevan could be ordered to serve as much as 15 years in prison for each of the offenses.

Youth Minister Convicted Of Sexual Assault

Connecticut: A jury has convicted a former youth minister of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl he had been counseling and sending naked photos to her.
